Shilpa: Hi, Gail.
Hi Shilpa. Thanks for having me again. Oh, of course. Well, it's an exciting episode and I'm really excited that you're a part of it. It's the kickoff of the official bonus premium track for Amplify Authentically, and you're my guest to speak to this topic of. What I call unveil, but we'll unpack that in a moment, but before I get too far ahead for the audience that is now part of the premium series, maybe you could share who you are and your background.
Gail: Sure. My name is Gail Beltran. I'm a thought leadership and messaging coach, [00:03:00] and I am power purpose-driven entrepreneurs in. Amplifying their message and attracting their ideal clients while still staying true to their values. My background is in, gosh, there's so much, but I would say my immediate background was in social media.
I did social media strategy and social media consulting, social media management, and I noticed that, uh, my clients would give me this generic content to work with, uh, as if they were afraid to state an opinion and. Understandably, you know, it, it, can be a little scary out there when you take a stand, but the same time when you take a stand and share your message through your values, you're gonna attract the kinds of clients you wanna work with.
You're gonna attract the clients that are aligned with you, aligned with your values, and it helps you stand out. You're not lost in the crowd because there's no one [00:04:00] like you. If you're willing to go that deep and share that part of you online.
Shilpa: I love the way you express the need to get to the place where you are able to authentically share your truth.
'cause getting there can be scary.
Gail: Mm-hmm. Yeah, it is true. I mean, especially in, in today's climate. So what I help my clients with is as they define their values, knowing that are the values - the thing that you believe in, the values you believe in greater than your fear. Yeah. And if it is, then it's willing, then it's worth it to, to stand up for that.
Shilpa: Yes. And that can be true for a personal part of your life and a personal pivot or mm-hmm. Or what I call second act of life.
That could be anything. It could be I need to travel more, or it could be I need to leave my
Gail: corporate job. Right. Right. And you know, there's pros and cons to, to [00:05:00] any of those.
And it just depends on, well, how, how much do you really want it? Like, is it, is it worth the comfort and security of a job that you never know if you're gonna have tomorrow to honest? Oh, I,
Shilpa: I totally. And I've been there. Um, there, it took me years before I shifted out. And they were micro steps, I would call them micro pivots.
Yeah. And some of them are conscious, some of them are unconscious. Mm-hmm. Some of them were like, I once he was this metaphor to share, um, with someone that it was like having a blindfold on and you're, you know, you're in a space where you want to move and navigate through it. Mm-hmm. But you don't, while there are objects around you, you might be stubbing your toe.
Gail: And that's okay. But I like how you phrase it with the micro shifts. 'cause I like to work with my clients in that same manner is if you're, when you're first getting started [00:06:00] in expressing who you really are, I recommend they start out with journaling. 'cause that's just for them. They don't have to share that with anybody.
But how honest can they be in the journal? Then as they develop that voice, and I think this is where your program really stands out, is that they can take that rough draft in the journal and have AI help them, um, massage it into what the algorithm's like. So take what I wrote and then put it in the structure that these different platforms like.
Shilpa: Absolutely. And multiple things come to mind as you expressed, and thank you so much for expressing it so eloquently. This program that I put together for those who are tuning in for the first time, , the seven days, , course that I've just released called Unveil with AI is really like what Gail was articulating,
that unveil with AI is something you may want to [00:07:00] explore if you're trying to
Shilpa: undersurface those things that are inside of you and understand how is it tied to your values.
Maybe it's been a long time before you've even thought about, what are my core values? What is my purpose, and what is my why? And that can happen in your twenties. Or it can happen like some people in, in their forties and fifties again, because they're making those shifts.
Gail: Yeah. And, and life changes. You grow, so, and you expand, so your values may change or maybe your definition of that value might have changed.
And that's all part of life too. So I think we should embrace it.
Shilpa: What's interesting about. Coupling this experience, this process, so to speak with ai, is that while there's. Some trepidation on many people's parts about a variety of topics when it's related to ai from my perspective, and this is what I teach, is that one can think of it as an agnostic, non-judgmental [00:08:00] partner.
If you are familiar with mountain climbing, if you were going to the Himalayas, you would have a Sherpa. Along with you, they don't tell you exactly what to do 'cause you're there for your own personal growth and journey, but they may help you navigate. And with AI there are different layers in which one can use it to, objectively get some feedback That's somewhat, based on pure science because.
Ai, large language models are based on patterns. Those patterns are how humans communicate. Right, right. So that brings us to the topic. You just mentioned journaling. I would love for you to share more about that because this program I have the seven day program, it gives you layers and layers of.
Iterative communication with prompting with AI where you are now. Mm-hmm. Taking that information each day and putting it into a digital journal, [00:09:00] but what one could I can foresee is that then they can take that information that's in a digital journal that consciously and consistently expand on it, not just as a one time static.
Encounter. 'cause our growth is not in a box. We are dynamic beings that require consistency, so, mm-hmm. Perhaps that consistency element is where that handoff occurs with you.
Gail: Right. Yeah. There's a, a story to strategy session that I teach my clients, and the first step is in creating a reflection ritual, whether it's daily, which I prefer, I like them to get to a point where they can journal daily, but if not daily, then weekly is fine.
And what they're gonna do is take a look at maybe their calendar. Maybe that's the place they start is take a look at the last week's appointments and what [00:10:00] conversations did you have? What was the topic that came up? What did you discuss? And find the lessons in there that could apply to your work and apply to your clients and start becoming that storyteller.
Uh, and think of, think of your favorite novel. You know, you think of that, that hero's journey, or in our case, maybe a heroin's journey. Uh, who was there, what was going on, what was the situation, what was, and then you can go into your senses. So you really flesh out, flesh out that, that story there. So creating that reflection ritual is really important.
Um, the second step is creating a place where you keep all these stories, and I call it the story bank. It could be in notion, I use something called, um, simple Note, which was made by the people at WordPress and it's free. So I keep all of my written things in there. If I write it by hand, I could take a picture and have chat GBT, transcribe it for me and put it into simple note and so on.
So [00:11:00] have that story bank, uh, where you save all that. All these ideas and add in some keywords. So if you ever need a story of, oh, I need something for this lesson, I wanna teach, you could do a quick search and find it in your notes and you have it already written out. Um, and then third, it's being able to, to tell that full story in a.
A formal setting, whether it's on a social media post, LinkedIn, Instagram carousel, or even a keynote speech. So taking that story and then giving it time to develop it into a, a formal format that can be presented to the world.
Shilpa: I love that. And. You mentioned a lot of tools that I think that many of us may not either be aware of or forget about.
Like yeah, words might seem like this, you know, thing that's very formal that you had to do when you were writing something for work or [00:12:00] school, but it can be weaved into your common day life, like I use. Mm-hmm. Um, the iPhone notes app. All the time. Mm-hmm. And then I've come up with tricks as well. 'cause you also mentioned the retrieving information like I do, like hashtag and mm-hmm.
And then Gail. And so then every time I've had a conversation with Gail, I can pull those conversations up. Right. Or threads. Right? Yeah. Yeah. Well, and that is the beauty of technology, whether it's AI or AI under the hood, or other types of
apps are available to help us.
Shilpa: Improve our ability to get to know ourselves better.
' cause that is applicable not only in our personal growth, but also professional transformations. Right.
Gail: There's sometimes when, especially when we're solopreneurs, we get stuck in our own head, in our own way. It's nice to have this, this tool, this guide that can be the objective. what's the word?
Kinda advisor or supervisor or guide. [00:13:00] And, and I like how, also how you can give it a personality. Yeah. So you can say you are like, uh, maybe you really like the work of, um, uh. I'm trying to think of one of the coaches. Oh, there's a, a LinkedIn coach that I've been following recently, Justin Welsh. So I've told my AI to be Justin Welsh and review my LinkedIn strategy and see where I can improve it.
Shilpa: And I love that because that is very similar to the way in which I'm trying to build in the prompts in the seven day course, is that mm-hmm. It allows you to view. Different tools, AI tools, and particularly in this case, um, my focus has been ai, um, chat, GPT, but mm-hmm it allows you to become the filter.
But what if mm-hmm. Like you were just saying, Justin Lauch, what if different voices can come through because they are the people that you go to as your
source of.
Shilpa: authority so to speak. So like, sometimes [00:14:00] I will
train Chad, GPT.
Shilpa: Gimme the wittiness of Amy Porterfield in when she describes one of her new programs.
And I just love the way she is eloquent. So you can do that. And even if that AI isn't yet trained, it can be trained by you giving it copy and context,
Gail: right? Yeah. One of the. Tips I love doing with training AI is to give them a personal essay I wrote. It was actually a speech I gave. I'm in a Toastmasters club and your first speech in Toastmasters is called an Icebreaker, and it's just a way to introduce yourself to the group.
So I, I gave a speech, my first speech with them five years ago was on becoming a mom at the age of 43. That decade of trying and not, you know, it's not happening and giving up or surrendering and then it happens. Uh, you know, when I was, uh, completely surprised, so I gave that speech. I did write it first, and then I gave the speech.
I took the transcript of the speech, had AI [00:15:00] kind of proofread it into a, a blog post. It's on my personal blog site. And then when I started using. Chat, GPT back then, I'm now on Claude, but I would give the a AI whatever tool I was using my personal essay because that's my voice, like without any kind of maybe some correction and grammar, well, not grammar really, but more in correction, punctuation.
But that's my voice. That's how I speak. It's, it's kind of informal. And I would feed AI here. Here's how I really talk. And then that way it doesn't get too formal. It doesn't, it, it still sounds like me when I have it generate or improve. A journal draft, for example, into a LinkedIn post, but I always go back to it and, and reread what they post.
Uh, I know there's tools out there that will automatically generate content for you, and I don't trust those yet because it's too, I don't know. It's just not me.
Shilpa: Yeah, I agree. [00:16:00] There are ways to batch produce copy for social media and I'm not quite there. I do post regularly, but everything has gone through my own filter of mm-hmm.
Who I'm my brand, my mine
Gail: too,
Shilpa: everything. And then that just slows things down. But that also goes back to authenticity. That yeah, you are still that voice behind, everything that you're putting out there.
Now I wanted to get to the heart of something that may be, An assumption you and I have made because we've been in a space of social media, solorpreneurship so to speak.
And, technology. It seems like that's a Venn diagram where there's an overlap for both of us. Um mm-hmm. Let's say there's someone who is in the demographic that we are serving. 'cause I think you and I are serving very similar demographics, and they're like, well, yeah, I, I know I want. That second act to happen.
I don't like ai. I will never do ai. You've heard that before?
Sure. Right? That's okay.
Yeah. And then they're like, but some of the stuff you're [00:17:00] saying is helpful. Mm-hmm.
But why would I want to focus on writing? Why copy, why writing.
Gail: Interesting. There is scientific proof that handwriting your thoughts brings clarity.
To what you're thinking, it actually can help, uh, lower stress levels. Um, it fires more neurons in your brain, so it's great for brainstorming. And then there's also the metaphysical side of when you're riding, uh, and there are certain people who can give you more information, but I've heard different things of using your dominant hand or using your less dominant hand riding in a certain color ink, like there's so many ways you can play with this.
To tune into your higher self. So fir, first of all, I would recommend it's right. And now there are people, um, I, I'm neurodivergent, my family's neurodivergent, so I'm learning more about. [00:18:00] The different aspects of, um, neurodivergency. And there are some people where handwriting is just, it's a no go their hand and their brain just doesn't work that way.
So typing is, is actually their way of communicating, which is great. Uh, so using your way of, uh. Getting your thoughts onto paper or digital notebook will help you clarify that. And even as a speaker, I do consider myself a speaker for a while. I consider myself a speaker more than a writer, and now it's kind of switched.
But even when you speak, you still write. You still have to write out your speech, you still have to write out your notes. I mean, there are some people out there who can improvise a whole keynote. I am not one of those people. I need an outline at the very least, and I need some key phrases that I'm going to start with, do my transition and end with.
So yeah, I mean we, I think we all write in some way, whether it's handwriting or um, or on a computer, on a keyboard, but with. [00:19:00] For me, I'm, I'm focused on people who wanna be seen as thought leaders. They want to write a book, they want to do keynote speeches. They, they wanna be seen as an authority in their field because they are.
And in this world, people don't know who you are. They can't find you if you don't put yourself out there. So if you want clients to come to you, you gotta be easy to find and we have to know who you really are. 'cause there's so many people out there. Uh, I wanna work with the person who I feel connected to, who I feel aligned with, and then that's my person.
Um, but yeah, we can't find you if you don't put your message out there. So whether it's through video or through writing, um, that's, yeah. So, yeah. Yeah.
Shilpa: But you just nailed it because I, wanted. A perspective on writing is more than just literally the words on a paper or digital. It is the act of [00:20:00] allowing you to become more familiar with yourself so that when you're ready to connect, and it could be a personal thing, maybe you wanna find her soulmate and you wanna connect, and this is not about professional pivots for you, but still, if you're going to put yourself out there.
You're going to need to do some reflection and then writing. Right. You still need to write your profile. You still need to write your profile.
It's interesting 'cause I met my husband through match.com and my profile bio, when I was truly ready to write it matched his, unbeknownst to both of us.
'cause we had both put in so much thought into writing it that it mirrored each other and we were able to figure out, I connect. That's the beauty of writing and going through this process of learning to be able to really know yourself and your values
so yeah,, it helps you get your message out and then when you're ready, you can nowadays, probably give your message out on [00:21:00] a video on whatever tools are out there,
because if you have something to share and you do, that's the other thing. You use the word authority. We are all niche authorities in some area of our life. Yes,
Gail: definitely.
Shilpa: Right?
So gail, about authority, do you have anything else to share about how, , you believe either AI or writing can help you build your authority? And it could be either on a personal level or professional or both
Gail: for writing to, to build authority.
I think that. Sometimes people are afraid to get started 'cause you're, they feel like they don't have their message down yet. And building that authority comes with this practice of getting those, those thoughts down. So I would rather they start. At nothing or just get started and play with journaling, [00:22:00] play with ai, and as they write more or as they share more or speak more, that authority content will come out from this practice.
Shilpa: Absolutely.
And this program, that I've put together for the unveil with ai, it takes you through the seven day process going from creating flow.
And for those who may not know, you can speak into voice through voice mode into ai, which is immensely valuable for creating flow. 'cause some of us think, I don't have anything to say.
But then if you are recording yourself, you're like, oh, that's interesting. I just spoke for 20 minutes. But then you go into reflection. You then start seeing the patterns. Then you start feeling confident like, wow, there's some cool niche things I've done with my life. I have something to share. Then from there, you start thinking, you know, maybe I, I am ready for visibility.
I'm tuning into my real identity. [00:23:00] And now I have a vision for where I'm going. And that's the fun part. 'cause as you were mentioning earlier, the reflection, that entire seven day process really about reflecting and doing, and then the doing part comes in with your program. Tell us about your, the name of your program and how to work in congruence with, having an AI as a tool in this seven day course.
Gail: Yeah, it's called Impact Messaging Lab and there is a a free subscription. So if you just wanna read my tips, you can go to my substack called Impact Messaging Lab and subscribe from there. If you like to be a paid subscriber, then you're part of the community where we have. Daily co-working sessions where we're writing together.
I give them storytelling prompts to work on every week, and then once a month we'll have a group call where they could get to know each other as well as ask any questions or get any feedback on their writing.
Shilpa: That is wonderful. And for those who are curious about [00:24:00] the unveil with ai, it's a seven day subscription based.
Of course it comes with many other value adds, and the link will be in the show notes for both Gail and myself, and we'll be doing this potentially once a month. Yeah,
Gail: looking forward to it.
Shilpa: Yes. Thank you, Gail. I really appreciate having you on my show.
Gail: Thank you.
